Ultra-Low Power ePaper Display for Passenger Information Systems

To support the requirements of todays passenger and customer information systems, FORTEC UK has expanded its ePaper portfolio with the LITEMAX IEPA-1330-RKC3-WGLD, an ultra-low power dual 13.3-inch colour ePaper platform developed specifically for Passenger Information Systems (PIS), smart transportation and outdoor public information applications.

Conventional digital signage requires continuous power to illuminate the display, making installation expensive where mains power is unavailable or difficult to access.

ePaper takes a fundamentally different approach.

Rather than consuming power continuously, the display only requires energy when information changes. Once updated, the image remains visible without further power consumption. This simple but significant difference enables engineers to rethink the architecture of passenger information systems.

Battery-powered and solar-assisted deployments become practical. Remote bus stops, temporary transport hubs, rural stations and smart city information points can be installed with significantly lower infrastructure requirements, whilst reducing long-term operating costs and supporting decarbonisation objectives.

For transportation OEMs and system integrators, this creates new opportunities to deploy digital passenger information wherever it delivers the greatest value, rather than only where power is readily available.

Designed for Modern Transportation Infrastructure

The LITEMAX IEPA-1330-RKC3-WGLD combines ultra-low power operation with the ruggedness required for demanding public environments.

Featuring dual 13.3-inch colour ePaper displays with a combined resolution of 3200 × 1200 pixels, the platform delivers crisp, high-contrast passenger information that remains clearly visible in direct sunlight without requiring a backlight. Wide viewing angles ensure excellent readability across busy public spaces, whilst a refresh time of just 450 ms allows timely updates to passenger information.

The platform has been engineered for outdoor deployment, incorporating an IP65-rated aluminium enclosure with IK10 impact resistance to withstand challenging environmental conditions and high-traffic public areas.

Enabling Smarter, Connected Passenger Information

Modern Passenger Information Systems are becoming an integral part of intelligent transportation infrastructure.

The IEPA-1330-RKC3-WGLD supports this transition through integrated wireless communications for remote content management, reducing maintenance requirements and simplifying system administration. Optional NFC functionality also provides opportunities for future interactive passenger services and enhanced user engagement.

By combining connectivity with ultra-low power operation, the platform enables engineers to design passenger information systems that are both more sustainable and more flexible.
