AAEON BOXER-8655AI for intelligent transport applications

As transport systems become increasingly connected, system integrators are being asked to manage more cameras, sensors and data while supporting new functionality throughout the lifetime of the system. Processing this information efficiently, and close to where it is generated is becoming an important consideration when developing the next generation of intelligent transport technology.

FORTEC United Kingdom has introduced the AAEON BOXER-8655AI, a rugged, fanless Edge AI computing platform designed to provide high-performance local processing for connected transport applications.

Powered by the NVIDIA® Jetson Orin™ NX, the BOXER-8655AI enables AI workloads to be processed at the edge rather than relying solely on cloud-based infrastructure. This provides system integrators with a platform for applications involving real-time video analytics, intelligent surveillance, passenger monitoring and the processing of data from multiple onboard sensors.

One of the key challenges when introducing intelligent functionality into an existing transport architecture is bringing together data from different sources.

The BOXER-8655AI supports up to eight GMSL2 cameras through FAKRA connectors, allowing multiple high-resolution camera feeds to be connected directly to the system.

Alongside its camera interfaces, five Gigabit Ethernet ports, CANBus, serial interfaces, digital I/O and USB provide extensive connectivity for integrating additional equipment and sensors.

This combination gives transport system developers greater flexibility when building applications requiring multiple sources of operational data to be processed through a single Edge AI platform.

Transport infrastructure can remain operational for many years, while the functionality expected from it continues to evolve.

The processing capability of NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX provides a platform from which developers can introduce increasingly sophisticated AI and computer vision applications without sending every data stream back to a central or cloud-based system.

This could support applications ranging from intelligent video surveillance and passenger monitoring to vehicle analytics and other emerging AI-enabled transport functions.

Optional Wi-Fi and 5G/LTE connectivity via M.2 expansion also provides opportunities to integrate the platform into wider connected transport and fleet architectures.

Processing performance is only part of the requirement when computing hardware is deployed within a transport environment.

The BOXER-8655AI combines a 9–36V DC input with ACC ignition delay on/off functionality to support integration with vehicle electrical systems.

Its rugged, fanless construction is designed to withstand shock and vibration to MIL-STD-810G, while an operating temperature range of -15°C to +70°C supports deployment where environmental conditions can vary significantly.

The system is also E-Mark certified, further supporting its use within vehicle-based applications.

With dimensions of just 246 × 164.2 × 88.8 mm, the platform brings considerable AI processing capability into a compact enclosure suitable for installations where available space can be limited.

For transport system integrators, introducing AI is not simply about increasing processing performance. The platform must connect with existing equipment, process multiple sources of information and provide sufficient flexibility to support the changing requirements of the transport system.

By combining NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX processing, eight GMSL2 camera interfaces, extensive I/O and rugged construction, the AAEON BOXER-8655AI provides a powerful Edge AI platform for developing increasingly connected and intelligent transport applications.
